Cogeneration units can provide extra power for municipal utilities, but they cannot replace Kyiv’s CHP-5 and CHP-6.

A full replacement of the city’s CHP-5 and CHP-6 with small cogeneration units is unrealistic from both a technical and practical standpoint. Doing so would require at least a thousand machines.

Sviatoslav Pavliuk, Executive Director of the Association «Energy-Efficient Cities of Ukraine, ” said this on the program Kyiv Time.

According to him, that mini-CHP units could serve as a reserve electricity source for municipal heating companies, water services, and other critical infrastructure in the event of emergencies or breakdowns.

At the same time, the expert stresses that supplying Kyiv with electricity, which exceeds 1.5 gigawatts, would require over a thousand cogeneration units. Beyond the sheer number, serious challenges remain regarding their placement, grid connection, and ongoing maintenance.

«The quickest connection of a cogeneration unit I am aware of, took around a month. In most cases, it takes considerably longer,» Pavliuk said.

«Having two cogeneration units would, of course, be helpful. But they would not fundamentally address the issue.»
