Russia hits Kyiv and region in massive attack: Reports on death toll and damage (photos)

Russian forces carried out a large-scale attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region overnight into Friday, January 9. Four people were killed in the capital and at least 25 were injured.

The Office of the Prosecutor General, the State Emergency Service and Kyiv Police reported the consequences of the attack.

Attack on Kyiv

According to law enforcement, by 07:00 four deaths had been confirmed. Among the victims were three residents of a residential complex in the Dniprovskyi district. Another casualty was a 58-year-old emergency medical worker, who had arrived to assist people in the Darnytskyi district.

The number of wounded rose to 25, including medics and rescuers who were working in the Darnytskyi district when a second strike hit.

Damage was recorded across several districts of Kyiv, including Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Desnianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Pecherskyi and Holosiivskyi. Multi-storey and private residential buildings, a kindergarten, garage cooperatives, cars and infrastructure facilities were affected.

Attack on Kyiv region

Russian forces attacked nearly all districts of the Kyiv region overnight. Shelling caused fires in homes and farm buildings in the Brovary, Obukhiv and Boryspil districts. The fires were put out by morning.

Emergency workers rescued four people in the Brovary district — a mother, father, grandmother and a five-year-old child. They were pulled from rubble after the strike. All were given medical care and remain in hospital.
