Patriot in Kyiv city center: Aviation expert explains if it will protect the capital

The Patriot air defense system in central Kyiv is not an effective shield against enemy strikes, Khrapchynskyi said during an interview with Radio Donbas.Realities.

The expert says that the radar horizon plays a key role, as it allows threats to be detected at a sufficient distance without obstructions from buildings.

«Kyiv’s terrain, including its hills, does not allow for a fully functional local defense system. Therefore, only a comprehensive city-wide defense can work,» Khrapchynskyi says.

According to him, no country in the world is prepared for attacks of this scale. There is currently no universal solution that could reliably counter such threats.

«We need to develop effective detection systems that can be positioned at heights capable of covering the 'blind spots' of traditional air defense means,» the expert added.
