Barbaric strike on Kyiv cultural landmarks: Zhytniy Market, bookstore, and gallery damaged

Overnight into May 24, a strike by the Russian terrorist army in Kyiv damaged the Ye Bookstore, the Hinaus Gallery, the Ukrainian House, and the Zhytniy Market building, which was recently added to the cultural heritage list.

This is reported on social media.

The Russian strike blew out windows at the Zhytniy Market building, which was designated a cultural heritage site last year.

In 2025, Zhytniy Market marked its 45th anniversary.

The blast wave damaged the facade and entrance windows of the Ukrainian House.

The Hinaus Gallery reported damage from the Russian attack, saying that the blast wave shattered windows on its premises.

The Russian attack also blew out windows at the Ye Bookstore on Spaska Street.

Damage was also sustained by the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, which marks its centenary this year.

The institution noted that the Russian strikes damaged its library, book repositories, and most departments.

"The difficult financial situation of the country’s oldest literary studies institution has become even more complicated. For obvious reasons, the catalogs of the Manuscript Center are temporarily unavailable to readers," the statement reads.

The main office of Ukrposhta on Maidan Nezalezhnosti was also damaged, according to CEO Ihor Smilyanskyi. Doors were damaged and windows were shattered.
